The Brooke Gallery: Where Sarawak’s Royal Legacy Comes Alive

    The Brooke Gallery

Visit The Brooke Gallery at Fort Margherita in Kuching and explore the story of Sarawak’s ‘White Rajahs’. Learn about James Brooke’s arrival in 1839, colonial defense history, and modern-day restoration. Full travel guide, hours, location & visitor info included.

    Why Visit

The Legacy of the White Rajahs

    Who Was James Brooke?

In 1839, an English adventurer named James Brooke arrived on Sarawak’s shores aboard the yacht Royalist. What followed was a century-long chapter of one of the world’s most curious monarchies—a non-native dynasty known as the Brooke Rajahs.

    A Kingdom Forged in Diplomacy

Through diplomacy, military aid, and cultural immersion, the Brookes established the Kingdom of Sarawak in 1841—earning deep respect from the local people while holding British colonialism at arm’s length.

    Fort Margherita

A Brief History of the Fort

Built in 1879 by the second Rajah, Charles Brooke, and named after his wife Ranee Margaret, the fort served as a defensive outpost overlooking the Sarawak River. Over time, it became a prison, a police museum, and now—the proud home of The Brooke Gallery.

    Restored & Reimagined

In a passionate effort led by the Department of National Heritage, the fort was fully restored by 2014. The Trust and Sarawak Museum curated the permanent exhibition, which officially opened on 24 September 2016, thanks to support from local and global volunteers.

    Inside

    What You’ll See

    • Original artefacts from the Brooke family collection
    • Displays on the Sultanate of Brunei, rebellion, and piracy
    • The journey from Brooke rule to Sarawak’s entry into Malaysia in 1963
