Laman Padi is an ecotourism museum in Langkawi, Laman means field and Padi means rice in Malay. The state of Kedah is recognised as the rice bowl of Malaysia, as it is the largest rice producing province in the country, and the museum showcases the history of the traditional way of rice cultivation in Malaysia.

Located in Pantai Cenang, the enormous stretches of paddy fields with mud and water buffalos, are sure to make you ponder about the sweat and the labour that goes into growing the staple food which feeds more than half of the world. This fully functional Paddy field and museum was created to elevate the standard of the agrarian community of Langkawi.

Spread over fourteen thousand acres of land, Laman Padi cultivates various varieties of paddy. Visitors can walk through the vast fields filled with scarecrows, water birds such as egrets and herons, and watch the farmers getting through with their work. The museum also organises free tours on certain slots where you can try your hands at planting tiny paddy saplings. It displays pictures, tools and equipment used in cultivating the primary food of Malaysia.

Here, you can gather information on how the past generations availed various natural resources around them to farm crops. The facility also has a cafe and restaurant serving local and western cuisines with a Malaysian twist. The meals can be enjoyed right in the middle of the green fields with a picture postcard view.

Laman Padi Rice museum has free entry and is closed on public holidays. Due to a lack of funding, the facility might appear in a depleted state, and staff may not be available to answer your queries on all occasions. Hence, it is best to call ahead to make a tour reservation.

Rice museums may not be big on your list of things to do in Southeast Asia, but if you’re travelling through Langkawi, a visit to Museum Laman Padi (Rice Garden Museum) is worth it. The island of Langkawi is part of Kedah, a state known as the rice-bowl of Malaysia and the highest producer of rice in the country.

In honouring its grand rice-bowl title, Langkawi opened the museum in 1998 as an exhibition centre for local rice-related artefacts, charts, photographs and rice planting tools, aiming as well to be an eco-tourism draw.

This colourful museum piece says it all

The weathered sign on the busy road barely indicates a sightseeing venue. You’d almost not know the museum existed, as it’s surrounded by vast acreage of paddy in different stages of growth, depending on the time of year. The fully operational 14-acre paddy field was designed to improve the quality and standard of the local farming community through helping to teach traditional agricultural techniques.

As far as the eye can see

It showcases the historical and cultural importance of traditional paddy-farming and offers the visitor a hands-on understanding of the methodologies of rice cultivation.

Yes, you can wade out into the flooded paddy field and have a go at planting and transplanting seedlings. Even a few minutes of this will greatly increase your appreciation for rice production (and that nasi goreng). Transplanting the seedlings or ‘saplings’ into the flooded fields takes hours of bent-over work, with water up to your mid calves.

There’s also a herb garden on site with detailed descriptions of various medicinal plants and their uses. Many of these plants are still commonly used by locals today. These tried and true natural first aid remedies save time and money as well.

Museum Laman Padi is located off Jalan Pantai Cenang in Pantai Cenang (Cenang Beach) across from the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort. They’re closed on Fridays and — be warned — many public holidays. There’s no entry fee for this little blast to the cultural past and there may or may not be someone available to answer questions in the museum itself, so it could be worth calling ahead — you also wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to scratch planting rice of your bucket list.

The countryside of Malaysia is peppered with miles of lush green rice fields. While these make for a pretty picture or two, this experience is amplified at Laman Padi.

This Rice Garden, just opposite Pantai Cenang, offers a sneak peak into the lives of locals. It also provides a way of understanding the nuances of a new culture. Here farmers demonstrate the process of planting the crop; guides educate visitors about cultivating rice; and the museum provides a great introduction to the paddy industry in Malaysia. The machinery used for harvesting paddy can also be found on site and it’s great if you’re travelling as a family—kids love frolicking in the fields while learning more about this popular grain.

The floating restaurant that is part of the Laman Padi complex offers a unique dining experience. The menu or food isn’t particularly spectacular but the concept more than makes up for it.

As a Singaporean, I am feel delight to eat this special foods that serve in Restoran Mee Abu, It is a delicious plate of mee Abu for such affordable price. But a bit hot because open air space with no fan.
Now this is the restaurant that I am looking for during my vacations in Kedah.
Do not worry about losing your pocket money because the price is worth for money you pay. Thumbs up to the restaurant.
