Tea Plantation Cameron Highlands – For decades, Cameron Highlands has attracted visitors to its cool jungles, quaint Tudor-style houses, fresh vegetables and fragrant teas. Cameron Highlands is one of the country’s most fertile agricultural spots, possessing all the right attributes for growing outstanding tea, and is situated over 5,000 feet above sea level on the main mountain range of Malaysia.

The true character of BOH’s teas is greatly influenced by the conditions at the tea gardens; namely high altitude, low temperatures, abundant rainfall and acidic soil. With amazing landscapes and stunning panoramic views, the tea gardens are truly picturesque.

History of Sungei Palas Tea Garden Cameron Highlands

Tea Plantation Cameron Highlands – BOH acquired the Sungei Palas Tea Garden in the 1950’s. At the time, the land was in a dire state and a far cry of what it is today. However, BOH’s then Chairman, Tristan Russell, saw the potential of Sungei Palas and over the years turned the ailing land into a lush tea garden recognisable across Malaysia and by international travellers.

With tourism continuing to grow in the Cameron Highlands region, BOH built the visitor centre and café in 2007. Dubbed J.A.’s balcony after BOH’s founder J.A. Russell, its iconic 20-foot overhanging balcony that doubles as viewing deck has made Sungei Palas Tea Garden a must-visit destination in the Cameron Highlands. In 2019, the visitor centre was expanded to include a new section.

Aptly dubbed Tristan’s Terrace, the new section has a seating capacity of 200 people with a gorgeous panoramic view, which only enhancing the unique hospitality experience and tea-drinking pleasures BOH offers.

Cameron Highlands Tourist Guide

Need some help navigating Cameron Highlands and leaning up on its history? Have a read at our tour guide and let us know your experience. Located in the state of Pahang and spanning 712 square kilometres, it is 5,000ft above sea level and boasts a cool tropical climate, with temperatures between 15°C to 24°C throughout the year.

About Cameron Highlands

Most people can’t help but fall in love with Cameron Highlands. Indeed, its picturesque views, refreshing temperatures and cream-slathered scones served with tea offer a far more tantalising alternative to the chaotic bubble of nearby cities.

First discovered in 1885 by William Cameron, Cameron Highlands is one of the most fertile agricultural spots in Malaysia. Located in the state of Pahang and spanning 712 square kilometres, it is 5,000ft above sea level and boasts a cool tropical climate, with temperatures between 15°C to 24°C throughout the year. Due to its constant climate, tea bushes in Cameron Highlands are harvested throughout the year, every three to four weeks, when new shoots ‘flush’ resulting in this region having a high yield of teas with consistently high quality.

Like fine wine, the character of our tea is largely influenced by the environment in which it is grown. Hence, Cameron Highlands boasting a cool tropical climate, acidic soil, abundant rainfall and hours of sunshine, is the ideal location for growing distinctive teas of unique character. The fertile land has also led to other agricultural booms such as fruits (did someone say strawberries?), vegetables, and fresh produce.

Its colonial history is still present in the modern day, as Tudor-style country inns and cottages with flower-filled gardens add to the harmonious ambiance and delicate mystery surrounding Cameron Highlands. It makes the perfect stop on anyone’s travel circuit, especially visitors hoping to revel in the general pleasures of life over a cuppa and an epiphany of a landscape oblivious to time and trends. After all, Cameron Highlands is best enjoyed at leisure.
