    According to the history, it was named after a group of miners found a handful of gold in every tray of sand they dig. This is described by J. A. Richardson in his book, The Geology, and Mineral Resources of the Neighborhood of Raub Pahang. According to him on page 36, “People found that for every “dulang” of sand there was a handful of gold.” Referring to the old folks’ tale in the early 19th century, an old man and his two sons discovered gold every time they scooped up the earth. Thus, the town and the district derived their name from the Malay word Raub which means “scoop”.

    What is the history of Sungai Lembing everyone should remember?

    “It’s shafts and subterranean tunnels reached depths of between 450 meters to 650 meters, reputedly the deepest in Southeast Asia.” In the early 1900, Sungai Lembing was a hive of activities where businesses of every kind of mushroomed and prospered. The main activity then was tin mining. Sungai Lembing in fact boasted itself is having the second richest tin deposit in the world and the biggest underground tin mine in the world. Its shafts and subterranean tunnels reached depths of between 450 meters to 650 meters, reputedly the deepest in Southeast Asia.

    The mine was a complex of underground tunnels estimated to be some 322 kilometers long if joins together. The complex was abandoned when tin prices fell sharply during the late sixties, and the result, most of the town folks left for greener pastures.
