    Introduction

Muzium Wau Kelantan is more than just a museum—it is a living tribute to Malaysia’s kite heritage. Nestled in Tumpat near Pantai Seri Tujoh, the museum showcases the evolution of wau, the iconic traditional kites of Kelantan, alongside international kite artistry. Visitors can explore exhibits, join workshops, and immerse themselves in the vibrant stories behind these airborne masterpieces. This destination is a must-visit for culture enthusiasts, students, artisans, and travelers seeking authentic heritage experiences.

    History

The idea of establishing Muzium Wau Kelantan was first proposed in October 2009 as part of Kelantan’s effort to preserve its kite-making traditions. Initially, the museum was planned for Pantai Irama in Bachok, coinciding with the 28th Pesta Wau Antarabangsa Kelantan. However, the location was later shifted to Pantai Seri Tujoh in Tumpat, a hub for international kite festivals.

On 8 June 2011, the museum was officially opened by YB Dato’ Haji Takiyuddin Bin Haji Hassan, then Chairman of the Kelantan State Committee for Local Government, Tourism, and Culture. Operated under Perbadanan Muzium Negeri Kelantan, the institution quickly became a cultural landmark. Its mission was clear: to serve as a reference center for kite history, craftsmanship, and global kite traditions.

Over the years, Muzium Wau Kelantan has grown into a vibrant cultural hub. It not only preserves traditional wau types such as Wau Bulan, Wau Kucing, and Wau Jala Budi, but also hosts international exhibits featuring kites from Japan, Thailand, Korea, Australia, and beyond. The museum continues to evolve, offering workshops, educational resources, and cultural programs that keep the art of wau alive for future generations.

    Visitor Reviews

Prabanathan, Kuala Lumpur ⭐⭐⭐ “I visited in March 2019 and found the museum small but informative. The location near Pantai Seri Tujoh is beautiful, perfect for a picnic or boat ride. However, I was disappointed that the museum was closed on Saturday despite the sign saying otherwise, though the souvenir shop was open. It felt like a wasted trip.”

JJ Joyce Jackie, Kuala Lumpur ⭐⭐⭐⭐ “In September 2018, I explored the kite museum at Pantai Seri Tujoh. The seaview was stunning, and the exhibits were well organized. It’s the only place where you can learn about wau from every Malaysian state. The educational content was excellent, making it a worthwhile stop for culture lovers.”

Mus May, Kuala Lumpur ⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Our family enjoyed the interactive kite-making session. My children loved crafting their own wau with bamboo and paper under the guidance of local experts. The museum offered a beautiful glimpse into Malaysia’s cultural heritage, and the affordable ticket prices made it accessible.”

Ashraff Mulong, Sarawak ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “The museum’s collection is impressive, featuring wau from across Malaysia such as Wau Bulan, Wau Kenyalang, and Wau Merak. I joined a kite-making workshop and later flew my wau in the open field provided. The seaside location added to the charm, with breathtaking views of Pantai Seri Tujoh.”

Gelanggang Seni Kelantan: Heritage Shows in Kota Bharu

    Gelanggang Seni Kelantan

Experience the heartbeat of Kelantan’s heritage at Gelanggang Seni—a vibrant cultural centre where ancient traditions meet modern appreciation. From shadow puppetry to martial arts, this is your gateway to the soul of Malay artistry. Plan your visit and witness living history in motion!

    Introduction

Gelanggang Seni Kelantan is a cultural gem located in the heart of Kota Bharu, Malaysia. Established in the late 1970s, this centre was designed to preserve and showcase the rich traditions of Kelantanese culture. Visitors are treated to weekly performances that highlight the artistry of wayang kulit, silat tari, rebana, gasing, and kite-making demonstrations. More than just a venue, Gelanggang Seni is a living archive where history, performance, and community converge.

    History

The origins of Gelanggang Seni trace back to the 1970s, when Kelantan’s government sought to create a dedicated space to preserve its unique cultural identity. Built on a one-acre site along Jalan Mahmood, the centre was envisioned as a hub for traditional performances and workshops. Over the decades, it has become a cornerstone of Kelantan’s tourism and cultural preservation efforts.

In its early years, Gelanggang Seni was primarily a venue for rebana ubi and wayang kulit, two art forms deeply rooted in Kelantanese heritage. As interest in cultural tourism grew, the centre expanded its offerings to include silat tari, gasing pangkah, and kertok. Today, Gelanggang Seni stands as a testament to Kelantan’s resilience in safeguarding its traditions against the tide of modernization.

    Highlights

    Cultural Festivals

Special events are often held during festive seasons, such as kite festivals and rebana competitions. These festivals attract both locals and tourists, creating a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates Kelantan’s identity.

    Attractions

    Wayang Kulit

Wayang kulit is perhaps the most iconic performance at Gelanggang Seni. Puppets carved from cowhide are illuminated against a screen, while the dalang (puppet master) narrates epic tales from the Ramayana. The combination of storytelling, music, and shadow play creates a mesmerizing experience.

The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epic poem traditionally attributed to the sage Valmiki. It narrates the life of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, focusing on his exile, the abduction of his wife Sita by Ravana (the demon king of Lanka), and Rama’s eventual victory and return to Ayodhya. Composed between the 7th–5th century BCE and 3rd century CE, the Ramayana consists of about 24,000 verses divided into seven books (kandas). It is one of the two great epics of Hinduism, alongside the Mahabharata, and has profoundly influenced literature, art, and culture across South and Southeast Asia.

    Silat Tari

Silat Tari is a blend of martial arts and dance. Performers demonstrate defensive techniques with fluid movements, embodying both strength and grace. It is a performance that reflects discipline, artistry, and heritage.

    Rebana

The rebana is a giant drum that produces deep, resonant sounds. Performances often feature rhythmic beats that accompany dances and ceremonies, creating an atmosphere of celebration.

    Gasing

Top-spinning, or gasing, is a traditional game that requires skill and precision. Demonstrations at Gelanggang Seni highlight both competitive and artistic aspects of this pastime.

    Kite-Making (Wau)

Kelantan is famous for its wau bulan, crescent-shaped kites decorated with vibrant motifs. Visitors can watch artisans craft these kites by hand, a process that blends artistry with aerodynamics.

    Trekking and Adventure

    Gateway to Nature

While Gelanggang Seni itself is a cultural venue, its location in Kota Bharu makes it a gateway to adventure. Visitors can explore trekking routes in Gunung Stong State Park or enjoy river activities along Sungai Kelantan.

    Wildlife Encounters

Kelantan’s natural landscapes are home to hornbills, macaques, monitor lizards, and even rare orchids. For nature lovers, combining a visit to Gelanggang Seni with outdoor exploration offers a balanced experience of culture and adventure.

    Nearby Towns

Kota Bharu is surrounded by towns rich in heritage. Tumpat is known for its Buddhist temples, while Pasir Mas is famous for traditional crafts. Each town offers unique attractions that complement a visit to Gelanggang Seni.

    Nearby Attractions

    Pasar Siti Khadijah

This bustling market is a must-visit for food lovers. Named after Prophet Muhammad’s wife, it offers local delicacies, handicrafts, and textiles.

    Istana Jahar

A former royal residence turned museum, Istana Jahar showcases Kelantanese history and royal traditions.

    Masjid Muhammadi

This grand mosque reflects Kelantan’s Islamic heritage and is a significant landmark in Kota Bharu.

    Conclusion

Gelanggang Seni Kelantan is more than a cultural centre—it is a living museum that preserves and celebrates the soul of Kelantanese artistry. From shadow puppetry to martial arts, every performance is a window into centuries of tradition. For travelers seeking an authentic cultural experience, Gelanggang Seni is a must-visit destination in Kota Bharu.
