Visit Taman Tugu Forest Trail for an invigorating and educational family hike amid lush jungle vegetation in the heart of the city. Taman Tugu is a welcome addition to KL’s green spaces which are under constant threat from urban development. The park opened in

September 2018 with the aim of conserving a 66-acre green-lung in the middle of Kuala Lumpur and turning it into an urban forest park open to the public. Currently there are 2 kms of forest trails on a 20 acre portion of the site and this will be expanded in due course.

Another 20 acres are scheduled to open in December 2018. There is a maze of trails around the park and it will take to about 45 minutes to see it all. There are some steps and gentle slopes for a reasonable workout. The paths are well marked and sign-posted so even if you get temporarily lost you won’t go far wrong.

There are a few benches around, sensibly constructed from termite-proof concrete, in case you need a rest or just want to slow down to observe your surroundings. There are also swings and an observation tower.

Taman Tugu Back in the 1930s

Back in the 1930s the Taman Tugu site was home to a number of bungalows occupied by British and local officers working for the Department of Agriculture. Many of the residents beautified their gardens with exotic and ornamental planting including palm oil trees imported from West Africa. Some of these trees and plants are still here.

After Independence the site housed the residences of a number of senior government officials but they were abandoned in the 1970s and the area became an illegal dumping ground for rubbish and construction waste which had to be cleared away and recycled in order for the park to be opened.

There were proposals to redevelop the site but fortunately greed did not succeed on this occasion and with the backing of Khazanah and the support of Malaysian Nature Society, FRIM and others Taman Tugu has been saved, hopefully forever, as a public park.

Some 4,000 trees are being planted here, added to the existing 1,000 or so trees identified as worthy of conservation. The result is lush foliage, more dense and varied than you see in many other urban parks and forest reserves around KL.

Many of the trees have been labelled and descriptions provided giving details of their features, habitat and usage. For example this Setambun tree (baccaurea parviflora) with edible fruits has been planted to attract birds, squirrels and monkeys to Taman Tugu.

I noticed that a lot of the foliage, of various species, has a yellow-brown stain to the upward facing side, while the underneath of the leaves looks the normal green. I wonder what the reason is? A fungal disease perhaps? If so, you would expect the underside of the leaves to be stained too.

Or some kind of nutrient deficiency or pollution in the soil? Possible – we know the site was used as a dumping ground. Or maybe acid rain?

That might explain why only the top of the leaves are stained and the park is surrounded by busy highways spewing out noxious fumes. Perhaps somebody knowledgeable might know the answer.

Lush green foliage is probably the last thing one would associate Kuala Lumpur with. But that is exactly what visitors to Taman Tugu and its surrounding area will find.

The urban forest park is located close to many of the city’s notable places of attraction. Around the area, you can find the Perdana Botanical Garden, Bank Negara’s Lanai Kijang and of course, the Tugu Negara.

As a matter of fact, the site is only separated from the Perdana Botanical Garden by the Jalan Parlimen road. The area is especially popular among fitness enthusiasts, and chances are you would see the place buzzing with activity in the morning, during the weekends.

As for Taman Tugu, the site offers forest trails amid a beautiful and serene environment. There are over 5,000 trees here that average between eight and 10 years old. More trails will be available in the future as work is still in progress.

As you explore the trails, you may just come across some palm oil trees. It is said that these trees were brought in by the British prior to the country’s independence. For history buffs, the palm oil seeds were brought by the British from West Africa, and it was initially planted here for ornamental purposes.

With such a rich history at the site, there are naturally murmurs of the supernatural among some visitors. But if you’re unfazed by myths and tales of the unknown, there are much natural beauty to uncover and appreciate at Taman Tugu.

The main trail is relatively easy to do and is suitable for beginner hikers. Only a few trails are currently open, with a one-way route for hikers. Many of the facilities – such as the gazebos, swings and covered rest areas – remain closed.

I visited Taman Tugu Forest Park recently on a weekend and noticed that there were some measures put in place during the recovery movement control order (MCO).

There was a security guard outside the starting point who conducted temperature checks on folks entering the area. If you plan to go, do comply with the park regulations.

Taman Tugu Malaysia is open daily from 7am to 6.30pm. The last entry is at 5.45pm.

Getting there

If you’re driving, search for “Taman Tugu Nursery” on Google Maps or Waze. This will lead you to the start of the forest trails.

Parking around the area is free but space may be limited. You can also head over to the Padang Merbok carpark, which is a 15-minute walk away.

Taman Tugu – FREE Hidden Forest Trail in Kuala Lumpur: What to Expect

Written by Helmi Hasan in Frugal Activities

The Taman Tugu trail is a newly planted forest park located just North of the KL Botanical Gardens and about a 14 min GrabCar ride away from KLCC. The forest trail is man-made and opened on the down-low. It’s a newly developed trail park smack in the middle of Kuala Lumpur city, where even most locals don’t know of its existence.

The area was previously proposed to be a commercial project. But luckily, the government decided to protect the secondary forest and plant more trees to develop it into a proper nature park. By coming and using the park, it will show your support to maintain existing forests and not develop it into yet another mall or condo. Check out Taman Tugu’s official website for more info.

Who is this Place for and Why?

  • Enjoy nature right in the middle of the city without driving out.
  • It’s a pretty solid idea to bring your date! Aren’t you bored with hanging out at malls and cafes all the time? Show that you have a sophisticated, nature-loving side.
  • It’s FREE.It’s only a 4km trail that will take you about 1 hour of walking.
  • If you’re into trail running, this trail will be super easy.
  • It’s so near to where you stay, Balkoni Hijau KL.

FAQ’s

  • How dense is the jungle?: It is not as thick as a proper jungle as some trees are newly planted. It still needs time to develop into a proper forest.
  • Is it educational?: Yes. Good efforts have been made by putting signboards and tags for plant names and species.
  • How difficult is the trail?: Super easy, I’ve seen people walk the trail while holding a baby. So it is family and toddler friendly. Suitable for trail running too if you’re into that.
  • Is it crowded?: Come on weekdays. But as most things in Malaysia, government projects are not advertised well, and even most Malaysians don’t know about this place.
  • How long is the hike?: You should allocate a minimum of 1 hour to complete the loop.

Taman Tugu Forest Park Malaysia weekly flowga session takes stretching and flexibility outdoors amidst an urban forest setting.

Taman Tugu is located just across Jalan Parlimen from the Lake Gardens (Taman Tasik Perdana) and behind Tugu Negara, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

A not-for-profit initiative led by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, this lush 66-acre urban forest opened to the public in September 2019. Encompassing a network of trails for beginners through 5,000 indigenous trees and 1000 species of flora and fauna, it has been embraced by the public as a place to unwind, explore and enthral.

Taman Tugu Malaysia – The nursery.

It’s within this pocket jungle, at the Taman Tugu Nursery, that Taman Tugu’s weekly Flowga sessions happen. Launched in October of last year, before finally finding its home on Saturdays at 10am, the one hour session of yoga and stretching takes place under an open but covered area.

April Kuan, leads the class, which is open to all ages and genders. A certified yoga teacher in Hatha and Vinyasa practises as well as sound healing, April is able to size up the class’ abilities quickly, and lead you through various asana (poses) that challenge your body while ensuring safety at all times.

I should know…. When I started attending, I had the flexibility of dried twigs and had only yoga’ed a handful of times. 9 months later, I’m still not bendy but I have noticed improvement in my flexibility and posture. I should also point out that April is one of my closest friends, but I promise I’m not biased; she really is a terrific teacher.

Besides April’s gentle guidance and the class being free for the community, the obvious draw of Taman Tugu’s flowga is that it is outdoors.

There’s something special about practising a physical form of mindfulness surrounded by the sounds, sights and sensations of nature.

Only occasionally erupted by the voices of excited people entering the park or tour buses dropping off passengers at the National Monument, there’s nothing quite as uplifting or sure to brighten your day as holding “Warrior 1” as you feel the breeze across your back or stretching into a “Cobra” as you catch sight of a squirrel leaping through the trees.

Time and day Every Saturday, 10am-11am. Do check Taman Tugu’s social media for changes to scheduled classes and drop-ins by guest instructors.

Location Taman Tugu Nursery.

Entrance fee to Taman Tugu Forest Park is Free. Donations in support of the space are welcome via Maybank account Amanah Warisan Negara 514123658594 or the Maybank QR Code available on the Taman Tugu website.

Facilities Ample parking at Taman Tugu Nursery; clean changing rooms, public toilets and surau; water dispenser to refill water bottles. Do bring your own yoga mat. A limited amount of yoga mats are available if you have none or forget yours, but you’ll need to arrive on time to benefit.
