LC Restaurant: We've nothing to do with Penang's Line Clear

KUALA LUMPUR: LC Restaurant in Kampung Baru said it has nothing to do with the famous Line Clear Restaurant nasi kandar outlet in Penang that was ordered to close because of hygiene offences.

Line Clear Restaurant here rebranded itself to LC Restaurant last year following a family tussle.

One of LC Restaurant's directors, Lokman Madinah, said the nasi kandar outlet here has always maintained cleanliness and its food quality since Line Clear was incepted in 1949.

He said what happened in Line Clear Penang, which was forced to close after rat droppings were found in its kitchen recently, had dented the image of the family business.

“We are disappointed that this happened. They (the Penang management) have failed to carry out the obligation entrusted to them.

“Their action has affected our good image and this worries us as we will take over the outlet beginning 2018,” he said at a press conference here Thursday.

LC Restaurant here is run by the children and relatives of Abdul Hamid Seeni Parkir, who is now retired after a family tussle over ownership of the Penang operation.

Abdul Hamid had lost in his bid in the High Court to stop the Penang Island City Council from letting a cousin take over the premises under a four-party rotational system.

On Jan 20 last year, the court ordered him to vacate the place and turn it over to the new management in three weeks.

Lokman said since the conflict broke out, the Penang outlet is now managed by their former employees.

“They have their own management. Their business now has nothing to do with us. We will only come back when it is our turn to take over next year as instructed by the court,” he said.

Lokman also gave an assurance that their restaurant is clean and that it has received good ratings from Kuala Lumpur City Council.

“We also practise an open kitchen concept and the customers are allowed to view it upon permission,” he said.

After the press conference, journalists were also invited to visit the kitchen.

On Monday, Line Clear in Penang was ordered to close for two weeks after rat droppings were found in the kitchen following an inspection by the city council.

This week, we feature two popular nasi kandar eateries. -

Restoran Yaseen Nasi Kandar Penang in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman is still a go-to place for one of the best nasi kandar in the city.

Nestled between several motorcycle shops in the heart of Chow Kit, the restaurant still draws its fair share of customers.

Here, the queue can be long, but the wait is certainly worthwhile.

Steamed rice is served with various curries such as chicken and fish head, fish roe, prawn sambal, fried squids, and more.

Typically, a mixture of curries or sauces is scooped over the rice, which gives this meal a distinctive flavour.

A typical meal consists of rice, steamed okra and a meat dish. Prices can start from RM6.50 onwards.

I opted for the fish curry with kuah campur or mixed curry and steamed okra.

The fish was very fresh and tasty, while the different curries lent the dish a unique flavour.

Unfortunately, the fried chicken was slightly dry and overcooked.

Restoran Yaseen Nasi Kandar Penang is open 24 hours.

However the restaurant is closed from 1pm to 2pm on Fridays.

The restaurant is at 351, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur.

#3 Nasi Kandar Kudu

Full name is Nasi Kandar Kudu bin Abdul located in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Jalan TAR). 10 meters walking distance from Nasi Kandar Mohd Yaseem. Corner shop at the other end of the row of shops opposite Tune Hotel in Downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Nasi Kandar Kudu

This is very famous nasi kandar restaurant as it serve you with authentic nasi kandar. You can expect a very long queue if you come during lunch time break.

Their delicious food is astounding especially if you ask 'kuah campur' (mixing with many curry's gravies).

You can have a breakfast at Nasi Kandar Kudu bin Abdul with roti canai and teh tarik.

The restaurant is visited by many of the country's leading celebrities including politicians. You can Tan Sri P.Ramlee pictures and several politician leaders photos at the shop

One restaurant in Kuala Lumpur which has been attracting a long line of customers to its corner-lot restaurant since 1969 is Restoran Kudu bin Abdul.

The restaurant in busy Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman serves only nasi kandar with a variety of meat and seafood, vegetables and curries.

Restaurant manager Haja Noordhin Bashir Ahmed said his father in-law started the business after leaving Penang for Kuala Lumpur.

“He ran a restaurant with his brother in Penang and the dishes they served were family recipes,” he said.

Getting there can be a hassle but it is worth the drive. You can find parking behind the restaurant.

Their daily specials are dishes like Ayam Kampung Kurma, Ayam Merah, Ayam Madu, Ayam Kampung Goreng, and Ayam Goreng Masala.

You can also opt for sides such as tauhu sambal, fried fish, salted egg, ladies fingers, and seafood like prawns and squid.

Their fried chicken is also good. I chose to try their special Ayam Sambal Bawang, which costs RM4.50.

Haja also recommends their Soy Sauce Beef (daging kicap) and said that it was the late P. Ramlee’s favourite.

With the big piece of chicken on my plate, I got the waiter to douse my rice with all the curry they had and added pickled cucumbers.

My bill was RM6 for a big piece of chicken with curry and vegetables.

You can quench your thirst with either their iced lime juice, or sirap bandung soda — a mixture of bandung with grass jelly and ice-cream soda.

The restaurant is open daily but is closed only once a month on a Sunday.

It is located at 335, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur. Business hours are from 7.30am-8.30pm from Monday to Friday. The restaurant is closed from 12.45pm to 2pm on Friday and from 7.30am to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday.

#4 Nasi Kandar Pelita

Nasi Kandar PelitaLocated in various locations in Kuala Lumpur including in Bangsar, Jalan Ampang etc. It is owned by Pelita Samudra Pertama (M) Sdn. Bhd.

The origin of nasi kandar, an Indian Muslim dish, can be traced to the very streets of colonial Malaysia. Here, amidst the proud houses and bustle of life, a lone figure would trek through the dusty streets, bearing baskets of food and rice hanging from a yoke across his shoulder. Tantalising aromas of fragrant curries, vegetables, fried fish, beef and chicken would precede his arrival as he went from house to house, hawking his fare.

Hence the name, ‘nasi kandar’, came from how this popular dish was delivered - nasi (Malay for rice) and kandar (Malay for yoke).

Later, as towns grew and the pace of life changed, the traditional nasi kandar hawker would put down his yoke and set up a hawker stall to cater to the popular Malaysian pastime of streetside dining. Today, Pelita Nasi Kandar still uses the same age-old recipes enjoyed by generations before to deliver traditional mouth-watering dishes that are part of Malaysia’s unique heritage.

Its a 24 hours restaurant serving halal food

A fusion of old and new

On 9 June 1995, Nasi Kandar Pelita first opened for business as a stall selling nasi kandar at a corner coffee shop at Taman Chai Leng, Perai, Penang. In a short time, word of Nasi Kandar Pelita's tasty dishes spread and some time later the restaurant was able to buy the coffee shop.

The growing popularity of Nasi Kandar Pelita's food led them to extend their business hours to 24 hours which helped transform the once sleepy hollow of Taman Chai Leng into a more lively and busy hub. People from all walks of life thronged to the restaurant just to taste their nasi kandar. Since then, Nasi Kandar Pelita has grown to become Malaysia's largest nasi kandar restaurant chain.

Nasi Kandar Pelita was established on the concept of bonding the old generation with the new generation of nasi kandar entrepreneurs. Combining the culinary knowledge of the older generation and the innovative business and management strategies of the new generation has resulted in turning a small scale business into a multi million Ringgit Malaysia international operation.

The men behind Pelita Nasi Kandar are two family friends, Mr. Kirudu Muhamed Bin Kuppaikanni or as regulars know him, Abang K. K., and Mr. Kaliq Jamal, popularly known as 'Pak Misai'. Abang K. K. has more than 40 years experience in nasi kandar cooking and is the very first person to introduce a fully wall to wall tiled 24-hour nasi kandar outlet located at Tamil Street next to the Penang Chowrasta Market. He introduced 'Kuah Campur' a specialty that definately give Pelita's nasi kandar its unforgettable taste. Pak Misai has more than 34 years experience in nasi kandar cooking and is a man of great culinary knowledge. Through his skill, he has improved and maintained the great taste of traditional nasi kandar.

#5 Original Kayu Nasi Kandar

Original Kayu Nasi Kandar

Located in various location in KL such as in Bandar Sri Permaisuri, Cheras. It's a 24 hours restaurant

When you make a visit to Malaysia, your experience just isn’t complete without making a trip to a neighbourhood ‘Mamak Stall’. ‘Mamak Stall’ means that little hawker stall around the corner, which provides good food at prices that does not make you think twice to frequent such eateries every night.

Basking under the moonlight and chatting with some of your family and friends while having your favourite cuppa is a priceless past time.

Today, from that little stall around the corner, many such eateries have evolved into much bigger establishments with some owning chains of restaurants that carry the same name. And Original Kayu Nasi Kandar is one of those that made it to the A-List.

How We Began?

Original Kayu Nasi Kandar started out with a stall at a coffee shop in SS2 Chow Yang here back in 1974 and grew to become one of the most popular “Mamak” restaurants in Klang Valley and Penang. Today, from the little stall around the corner, many such eateries have envolved into much bigger establishments with some owning chains of restaurants that carry same name. Original Kayu Nasi Kandar is one those that made it to the A-list.
The Nasi Kandar Story
Nasi Kandar had its humble origins in Penang Island, one of Malaysia’s key tourist islands up North. What does ‘Nasi Kandar’ mean? ‘Nasi’ means rice in Malay while ‘Kandar’ refers to a formidable stick that is slung across one’s shoulder to carry heavy objects securely hung on both ends of the stick. Nasi kandar was therefore coined to lend meaning to the way in which this local range of delightful Malaysian curry options was sold in the villages since time immemorial.
Over the years, Nasi Kandar has evolved into a far more exciting variety of dishes and has gained so much popularity that Nasi Kandar restaurants may today be found all over Malaysia, albeit, not all such restaurants have had their origins in penang….but as the saying goes ‘Copying is the best form of flattery’!
‘Original Kayu Nasi Kandar’ is however founded and managed by Penangites and we are proud to announce that our dishes are true blue Penang Originals. We are presently represented by more than 10 trendy lifestyle restaurants at prime locations throughout Malaysia, concentrated mainly in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Penang, operating under the well accepted brand name of Original Kayu Nasi Kandar. Endorsement from the regular patrons has made ‘Kayu’ synonymous with ‘Nasi Kandar’. While Nasi Kandar spearheads the signature dish menu, other mouth watering fried and hotplate dishes such as a great variety of fresh roti (leavened bread) and hot & spicy authentic dishes that tickles your adventurous taste buds must not be missed.

The third generation of Syed’s then took the bold initiative of venturing out and setting up shop in Kuala Lumpur, the cosmopolitan capital of Malaysia. The year 1968 marked the birth of Kuala Lumpur’s first Syed Restaurant, in the bustling commercial hub of Klang Valley.

There was no stopping the explosive growth of Syed restaurants. Kuala Lumpur’s second Syed Restaurant was born in 1981, in the idyllic suburban city of Shah Alam. In the same year, as part of its diversification and expansion program, the company also set up a dedicated Catering Division to cater to the growing demand for catering services by institutions and households.1985 marked the emergence of yet another Syed Restaurant in the satellite township of Petaling Jaya. In the two decades since, eight more Syed Restaurants have been set up all across the length and breadth of the Klang Valley.

A delectable dish they say takes time to be cooked to perfection—for the flavors to marinate, for the aromas to infuse, for the appetite to be truly satiated. Over the generations, Syed Restaurant has perfected the art of cooking. Today, both Syed Restaurant and Syed Bistro cater to an extensive range of classes and ethnic groups in Malaysia craving to savor the best in local and Western cuisine, in the ambience of a relaxed tropical setting.

Syed Bistro RestaurantThe Syed group of restaurants started off as a pioneer in the restaurant business, and has persevered successfully through thick and thin. While most other companies fizzled away, Syed stayed afloat and abreast, and stands tall and proud today as one of the most successful businesses in the food and hospitality industry. Credit for its success goes to a host of fundamental variables, top among the list of which are: its commitment to quality food that is unique and in a class of its own, and its visionary founders and passionate employees.

Over the years, the restaurant business has captured a sizable portion of the market and massive expansion was made all around the metropolitan city. With over a dozen successful outlets, Syed Restaurants have received much media attention and lime-light. The company boasts of many efficacious ventures. Most recently it introduced “Syed Bistro”, an energized brand name given in the year of the millennium, in which it re-engineered its restaurant outlook, service, and hospitality as part of a massive expansion program in the form of franchises. Various other brand names were introduced and operated by the company: The Janova, Syedina Curry House and Restoran Mydin, just to name a few.

The founder and co-founder of the organization have contributed in myriad ways to the business in particular, and the overall industry in general. Drawing inspiration from their organizational motto “One Step Ahead®”, the management at Syed has introduced and implemented many pragmatic and lucrative best-practices, which include, among others:

  • Restaurant Operations Systems
  • 24-7 Operation Hours
  • Introduction of Self Service System
  • Hardware and Designing System
  • Product Introduction System
  • Data Mining System
  • Etc.

#11 Restaurant ZK, kari kepala ikan,Kg Atap

Restaurant ZK, kari kepala ikan,Kg Atap

The best fish head curry located in Jalan Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur. The location is strategic and you can enjoy the food inside the restaurant (air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned) and outside which is under the tree.

It is very authentic fish head curry. The taste is very delicious you can mix gravies like fish curry, sambal sotong and rendang kicap (meat soy rendang). You can add dalcah and fish eggs.

The price for the fish head is depends on the size. The last time we ate at medium size fish head cost us around Rm80.

If you don't like to eat the fish head (maybe you come alone or solo traveller), you can order a simple nasi kandar (plain rice, mix gravies (kuah campur) and with fried chicken.

Memang Terbaik!!! (It's really delicious!)

You must be amazed to see the picture below

Star People's Food Awards - Restaurant uses ingredients from India to make tasty briyani

Restoran Ismail, TTDI, KL, Malaysia.
THE recipe may be more than 300 years old but the nasi briyani at Restoran Ismail in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, is anything but old and tired.
Restaurant owner Ismail Abdul Aziz said he got the recipe from his uncle, who had learnt it from his grandfather, going all the way back to India where this style of briyani originated.

“This is an original recipe and until today, we still import the ingredients from India, including the large-grain rice and spices. The rice, in particular, is pricier but it makes for very easy eating as the texture is light,” he said.
Ismail said he had personally tried the briyani from various places around the world.

“Briyani usually reflects the available spices, herbs as well as tastes of locals it came from.
“In Malaysia, I find that many people prefer a sweeter taste to their briyani as opposed to the spicy type, the latter being a favourite in some parts of India where cili padi is added to the rice,” he said, adding that his preference was usually for something in between the two types.
Restoran Ismail, established in 1977, has remained a firm favourite for people in the vicinity, with generations returning to enjoy it even after many years.
“It feels very nice to see the children of my customers from back in the day coming back with their own children in tow to enjoy my briyani. This is the only outlet and I do not intend to open any more,” he said.
Red FM radio announcers Terry and Azura from The Red Fix show had also checked out the restaurant in the running for the award.
“The briyani is very soft and definitely easy to eat. The proof of that is I actually finished the entire plate when usually I would not be able to,” Azura said, adding that nasi briyani brought back many memories for her as it was a must-have during special family occasions including birthdays.
Terry found the rice to be very fragrant and said it whet the appetite before even putting it in his mouth.
“In fact, even after adding the gravy that came with the side dishes, it did not lose its texture or flavour and the mix of flavours is very good,” he said.
Restaurant manager Mohamad Kamarol Bahrain said the most popular side dish to go with the rice was the signature fried chicken.
“We have various chicken dishes such as honey, kurma, masala and masak kicap but many still prefer the fried variety,” he said, adding that the restaurant was usually busy during lunch and dinner.
The restaurant is open from 7am to 9.30pm and can be contacted at 03-7728 2543.
The public can submit photos and stories via Metro Online Broadcast ( to nominate restaurants and vote for the ones they feel are most deserving of the title of Best Nasi Briyani.
Nominations are open until Jan 10 while voting will begin on Jan 15 to midnight on Jan 31.
The official announcement of the winner will take place in the first week of the following month.
Those who nominate, vote or successfully share a link, stand to win attractive prizes such as hotel stays and dining vouchers.

Overview/ History

How did we start ?

The story begins in 1968, when Mr. Muhammad Dulkif decided to open a small food business in Batu Gajah to cater good Indian Muslin food to people of Batu Gajah. The business respond was overwhelming and he moved to Kuala Lumpur to seek better business opportunities. Mr. Dulkif started a food stall in Taman Midah and later 1981 as the business flourished another stall was established in Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Sg. Besi and moving forth the 3rd stall at Len Sing Garden, Petaling Jaya and in 1984 he opened up another stall in Taman Tenaga, Cheras.

In year 1993, his son ‘Mr. Riyasutin Bin Mohammed Dulkif’ continued that business along with his mother after the bereavement of his father. Mr. Riyasutin dedicated all his enthusiasm and efforts to maintain and grow the existing business.

Few years later in year 2000, Mr. Riyasutin best friend ‘Mr. Haja Najmuddin ’ joined him and due to mutual understanding and strong efforts; both Mr. Riyasutin and Mr. Haja have succeed in transforming the business from stall base into conducive restaurant at Pandan Perdana Kuala Lumpur.

In few years, they had successfully opened more than 5 restaurants with new concepts that revolved Indian Muslim food business. Hajris Holdings Sdn. Bhd. was incorporated on 17th December 2007, as private company, carrying on the business of restaurants, F&B Services, catering, retail outlets and others.
