Everyone gets the warm welcome and twinkle in the eye here in Ikan Bakar Bellamy Gerai Seri Melaka. There was no need for fancy food photos here, we picked out the best-looking sotong (RM8-RM20) off the grill, and with a few quick slices of a knife, we had ourselves a beautiful large, plump squid ready for the taking. It was cooked perfectly, with amazing texture and taste!
Almost too pretty to eat. Almost. The accompanying sauces here are really emphasize their seafood, there was a wonderful chili garlic sauce and a chilli-studded dark sweet soy sauce (Kicap Lemak). We could not decide which one went better with our ikan kembong (RM7-8) or mackerel, as we scraped our precious scraps of sweet flesh while avoiding the thornbush of thorns in there. We were craving some sambal mangga actually, which is amazing with it.
They wrap banana leaves around the mackerel to give it a sweet, smoky flavour, and prevent the fragile fish from falling apart.
We skipped the side dishes served here initially, and minutes later when we changed our mind, we were amazed to return to almost empty chafing pans. Ah well, maybe next time.
It makes a quick disappearing act, so hurry!
